This is one of the questions I hear most often in hair transplant consultations, and it deserves a direct answer rather than marketing language.
How long does a hair transplant last?
Transplanted hair follicles, when taken from the correct donor zone, last a lifetime in the vast majority of patients. The follicles harvested from the back and sides of the scalp are genetically resistant to DHT, the hormone responsible for male pattern hair loss. When transplanted to the recipient area, they retain this resistance. They do not fall out the way the original hair in those areas did.
This is the scientific basis for calling hair transplant results permanent. In Dr. Vicky Jain's practice in Mumbai, patients with well-performed FUE procedures and appropriate candidate selection maintain their results at 10 and 15 years post-surgery.
Does transplanted hair ever fall out?
Transplanted hair goes through a shedding phase in the first 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. This is normal, expected, and does not indicate failure. The follicle remains alive beneath the scalp and regrows from month 3 onward. The hair that grows from month 3 is permanent.
There is a separate phenomenon called shock loss, where existing native hair near the transplant zone temporarily sheds due to surgical trauma. This hair typically regrows within 3 to 6 months. It is distressing when it happens and almost always resolves.
What affects how long hair transplant results last?
Three things determine long-term durability. First, donor zone selection. Follicles taken from the stable DHT-resistant zone at the back and sides of the scalp last. Follicles taken from the periphery of the donor zone, where DHT resistance is less reliable, may thin over time. A surgeon who harvests too aggressively or from the wrong zone is reducing the longevity of the result.
Second, ongoing hair loss in non-transplanted areas. The transplanted hair lasts. The surrounding native hair continues its natural loss pattern. A patient who has a hair transplant at 28 and continues to lose hair in adjacent areas over the next decade will eventually have transplanted hair surrounded by thinning. This is not a failure of the transplant. It is natural progression that should be planned for during the original procedure.
Third, medications. Finasteride and minoxidil slow or stop the progression of native hair loss in most patients who use them consistently. A patient who takes finasteride from the time of transplant protects their surrounding hair and preserves the overall result far better than one who relies on surgery alone.
Does a hair transplant need to be repeated?
A single well-planned hair transplant at the right stage of hair loss often produces a result that does not require repetition. Some patients choose a second procedure to increase density or address areas that have continued to thin after the first surgery. This is planned, not remedial.
A hair transplant that needs to be repeated for reasons of poor graft survival, inadequate planning, or progressive loss in areas that should have been treated initially is a different situation. This is why the original surgical plan matters as much as the technique.
How long before hair transplant results are fully visible?
New growth begins at month 3. Significant coverage is visible by month 6. The final result, including full density and mature hair texture, is assessed at 12 months. Any evaluation before 12 months is preliminary.
Is hair transplant in Mumbai permanent?
Yes. A hair transplant performed in Mumbai by a qualified plastic surgeon using properly selected donor follicles produces results that are permanent. The transplanted follicles do not carry the genetic instruction to miniaturise. They grow for life.
The variable is not the permanence of the grafts. The variable is whether the surrounding native hair is protected and whether the surgical plan accounted for future loss. These are planning decisions made before surgery, not outcomes determined by the procedure itself.
